Foreign Asset Disclosure Scheme 2026 | Indian Tax Guide
Have overseas investments or bank accounts that were not reported in your Indian tax return? Understand the Foreign Assets Disclosure Scheme 2026, check your eligibility and learn what to do before the deadline.
If you have worked abroad, received shares from a foreign employer, invested in overseas stocks or maintained a bank account outside India, it is worth checking whether your Indian tax returns accurately reflect your financial situation.
Indian tax rules can require certain taxpayers to disclose foreign assets and overseas income. The requirements depend on factors such as your residential status, the source of your income and the nature of your assets.
The Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers Disclosure Scheme 2026 provides an opportunity for eligible taxpayers to address certain past reporting omissions.
What Is the Foreign Assets Disclosure Scheme 2026?
The scheme, commonly referred to as FAST-DS 2026, allows eligible taxpayers to declare specified foreign assets or foreign income that was not previously disclosed or taxed correctly, subject to the scheme's conditions.
It also covers certain foreign assets acquired from explained sources, including assets purchased using income already offered to tax in India or income earned while the individual was a non-resident, where the relevant reporting conditions are met.
The eligibility rules and financial consequences differ between categories, so it is important to understand which provisions apply to your situation.
Who Should Review Their Foreign Asset Reporting?
You may need to review your records if you have foreign shares, RSUs or ESOPs from an overseas employer, foreign bank accounts, overseas property or other investments outside India.
This may also be relevant if you previously studied or worked abroad, have since returned to India, or retained overseas financial accounts after your circumstances changed.
However, having a foreign asset does not automatically mean you qualify for the scheme. Your tax residential status and the circumstances in which you acquired the asset matter.
What Is the Deadline for FAST-DS 2026?
According to the Income Tax Department, declarations under Form 1 of the scheme can be submitted from 16 August 2026 until 31 December 2026.
The scheme has different eligibility categories and payment requirements. Do not assume that every omitted asset qualifies or that the same payment rules apply to everyone.
If you believe your previous tax returns may have missed relevant information, review your situation with a qualified tax professional before making a declaration.
